How to Save on Your Energy Bills This Winter: Essential Advice for Milton Keynes Residents
As the colder months approach, managing energy bills becomes a top priority for many households. This winter, with rising energy
Many households in Milton Keynes are struggling to deal with rising fuel bills, and do not have access to information, advice and funding to make changes to their homes.
Home Energy MK wants to change this. We aim to be a “one-stop shop” for advice, information and guidance for homeowners in Milton Keynes who want to retrofit their homes.
The Home Energy MK programme is led by Milton Keynes Community Energy, mkcommunityenergy.uk. The programme is supported by Milton Keynes Council and we are working in association with expert partners to deliver our projects. These include the National Energy Foundation, Debouge Tech and Build Test Solutions.
Come and meet the Home Energy MK team at various locations around the city for some face-to-face support with your home energy issues this winter.
The word “retrofit” is used to describe the process of the process of making changes to your home so that energy consumption and carbon emissions are reduced. These changes should also provide the benefit of a more comfortable and healthier home with lower fuel bills.
New homes are required to meet building regulation standards on energy efficiency, but even in the new city of Milton Keynes the majority of people live in older homes which are less energy efficient.
According to latest Valuation Office data, one in six homes in England (15%) were built before 1900, and the age of a property is the most significant factor associated with energy efficiency.
Research reveals retrofitting could boost the sale value of your home by an average of £10,000, and the added value could be even higher for individual properties – depending on the measures installed and the location of your home.
Analysis shows that green upgrades, such as insulation, heat pumps, and solar PV, could reduce your energy bills by up to £1,878 a year.*

Even before the impacts of the energy crisis affected us all, many people were concerned about the climate crisis and the impact of gas central heating on carbon emissions.
We know that 40% of UK carbon emissions come from households. This means our homes have an important part to play in meeting the Carbon Reduction targets sets by the UK Government and internationally by COP27.
